Can parrots eat onion?

No. Onion — raw, cooked, or powdered — damages a parrot's red blood cells and causes anemia.

Keeper's noteOnion powder hides in a huge share of human foods — crackers, broths, sauces, seasoned rice. Check ingredient lists before sharing anything processed.

Why onion is dangerous for parrots

Onions contain sulfur compounds that rupture red blood cells, leading to hemolytic anemia, weakness, and in severe cases death. Cooking does not destroy the toxin, and concentrated forms like onion powder are even more dangerous per gram. Leeks, chives, and scallions belong to the same family and carry the same risk.

My parrot already ate some — what now?

Remove all remaining food from the cage, note what and roughly how much was eaten, and call an avian vet or an animal poison control hotline immediately. Do not wait for symptoms — early treatment makes the difference.
